　America 亞美利加合唱團，三位團員的父親均為美國空軍軍官，三人在倫敦唸大學時即組成，每人均具有詞曲、演唱和吉他演奏的能力。"A horse with no name 沒有名字的馬 "是亞美利加合唱團的首支單曲，發行於 1972 年初，曾在美國等好幾個國家成為冠軍。

　亞美利加合唱團的首張同名專輯最先是在歐洲發行，這個首發版本裡並沒有這首" A horse with no name "。後來在美國發行之前，他們覺得應該增加一首能夠讓美國市場喜愛的歌曲，當時他們在家中的錄音室裡錄有一首試聽歌曲，名為" Desert song 沙漠之歌 "，就是後來更名的"A horse with no name "。

　隨同父親被派駐英國，寫這首歌時，團員 Dewey Bunnell 杜威布乃爾剛在英國完成學業不久，其靈感源自家中錄音室裡懸掛的兩幅畫，分別是荷蘭天才畫家艾雪( M.C. Escher )畫中隱藏的怪馬，超現實大師達利( Salvador Dalí )畫中的沙漠，他想捕捉畫中乾涸、燠熱的焦躁氣氛。小時候，全家住在父親服役的范登堡空軍基地( 位於美國加州的太空發射中心 )，曾經一起出遊，行經亞利桑納州與新墨西哥州的沙漠區時讓他印象深刻，記憶中的沙漠景象也成為歌曲中一部份。

　由於音樂風格與唱腔神似民謠搖滾大將 Neil Young 尼爾楊，這首歌問世時曾引發不少議論。「我知道，每個人第一次聽到這首歌時，都會認為是尼爾楊的作品。」布乃爾毫不諱言的說道：「我從未迴避作品是受到他的啟發的這個事實，從歌曲結構到聲線都是。其實我有點受傷，因為我們受到了一些激烈的反彈，我想人們之所以攻擊我們，是基於保護他們心目中的英雄。」巧合的是，" A horse with no name "在美國排行榜拿到第一名時，被擠下冠軍寶座的歌曲就是尼爾楊的" Heart of gold 金心 "，許多人不明究理，還以為是尼爾楊接連有兩首歌登上榜首位置。

　" 馬 "的英文" horse "為毒品" heroin 海洛因 "的代稱，因為有這一層嫌疑，加上有人認為歌詞描繪出的景象，就是吸毒後產生的幻覺，這首歌曾被美國部份地區的電台禁播。儘管如此，它還是在美國排行榜登上了冠軍寶座，也是該團成績最好的作品，專輯則成為一張白金唱片。
