　1976 年，在老鷹合唱團錄製《 Hotel California 》專輯期間，格倫佛萊心裡一直回想起他在洛杉磯一趟驚險旅程中聽到的一句話。當時他坐在一個毒販駕駛的克爾維特跑車裡，意識到車子的時速已經超過 90 英里。

　克爾維特( Chevrolet Corvette )是美國雪佛蘭汽車 1953 年起生產的雙門雙人座經典跑車。當他發出抗議說開慢一點時，司機咧嘴一笑說：「別擔心，這就是快車道上的人生」這讓佛萊記住了這句話。

　在一次排練中，吉他手喬沃許彈奏了一段艱澀的即興樂段做為暖身，唐亨利和格倫佛萊立刻從中聽出了一首歌的雛形，最終，沃許、亨利和佛萊合寫出" Life in the fast lane "，粽後由唐亨利擔任主唱。

　歌詞中，佛萊和亨利想像出一對好萊塢男女，他們擁有金錢、派對、豪華跑車和毒品，卻不斷的將自己推向毀滅的邊緣。歌曲中女性並非老鷹某位成員的老婆或女友，只是他們在目睹洛杉磯的豪奢生活後塑造的虛構情侶中的一員。佛萊後來將這首歌的創作理念描述為一對好萊塢夫婦雖擁有一切，卻因過度消費而毀掉了自己的人生。

　這首歌於 1977 年做為促銷單曲發行，最高排名達到全美百大單曲榜第 11 名。
