　談及此曲的誕生，Elton John 艾爾頓強的說法簡單明瞭：

　「我坐在那兒，然後靈感來了！我邊彈邊唱：" What have I got to do to make you love me "......」

　Bernie Taupin 伯尼托平，這位艾爾頓強早期的作詞搭檔、也是流行音樂史上最傑出的作詞家之一回憶了接下來的過程：

　「我不認為艾爾頓強打算寫歌，那時我們坐在洛杉磯的一間公寓裡，他正彈弄著鋼琴，隨意彈出了一段旋律，我說：嘿，那真的很棒。基於某種原因，" Sorry seems to be the hardest word "這句歌詞在我腦海中閃過，和他正在彈的曲子完美契合，於是我說：不要再做任何變動了，我去寫點東西。幾分鐘後我寫好了歌詞，然後就有了這首歌。

　這首歌有趣之處在於它是艾爾頓強演奏旋律後激發出歌詞的極少數例子，而不是我們過去先有詞後有曲的模式。那一天，他在鋼琴上閒彈一些東西，然後問我的想法。實際上是立即的反應，歌名和前幾行歌詞飛快進入我的腦海，我覺得它們早已存在，只是需要一點提示。」

　" Sorry seems to be the hardest word "這首歌收錄在艾爾頓強 1976 年的專輯《 Blue Moves 》，推出後在全英單曲榜獲得第 11 名，全美百大單曲榜獲得第 7 名及成人抒情榜冠軍；2002 年，英國偶像團體 Blue 在第二張專輯中翻唱此曲，並邀請前輩艾爾頓強前來合唱，此一新版推出後大受歡迎，在歐洲及紐、澳等幾乎都獲得前五名的佳績，英國、蘇格蘭、荷蘭、匈牙利為冠軍，聲勢更勝當年。
